Hong Kong has been facing tech talent shortage for years, and the recent pandemic and exacerbation of the talent shortage has intensified the war for talent. According to a survey by the Manpower Group, IT talent is of the highest demand around the globe. As tech professionals possess skills that are transferable globally, to remain competitive as a tech hub in the region, Hong Kong must strengthen its strategy for cultivating, reskilling and upskilling tech talent.

Hong Kong's recruitment market faced a challenging 2022. On one hand, Hong Kong faced a supply-demand imbalance: the local workforce has continued to shrink while many companies were trying to fill replacement and new positions. On the other hand, the speed of tech transformation has left companies struggling to acquire talent with the right skills to meet the business needs. A solution to broaden the talent pool is to attract overseas talent to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Government has already announced a number of new initiatives, including the Talents Service Unit and other relaxing admission schemes, to proactively trawl the world for talents to enhance the city's competitiveness. Besides, the Government would actively nurture and retain local talents. On this front, business corporations have also been partnering with higher education institutions to foster or hire young people for the tech industry through skill-training programs or internships. To reskill and upskill talents to support the digital economy and meet business needs, many companies have pushed forward either corporate training programs to upskill current employees to bridge the tech skills gap, or hire retrained workers from other industries to fill the tech job openings. In fact, many bootcamps teaching high-demand tech skills, such as AI/Machine Learning, UI/UX and Data Analytics, have bloomed in the past years, offering reskilled talents the opportunities to jumpstart a career in tech.

As we look ahead to the new year, how shall the tech industry shape its tech talent acquisition and management strategies to tackle challenges of the talent war in 2023? In addition to reskilling and upskilling programs launched by the private sector, can NGOs/education institutions' education or training programs help bridge the tech skills gap or broaden the talent pool?

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of when the UWC movement has begun in Hong Kong, Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong is organizing a set of industry fireside chats at the Central Market for interested industry stakeholder and the public to come learn more about interesting discussions hosted by our alumni and joined by friends of the school.

On Feb 9th (Thursday) from 6pm - 7pm at Central Market, we will be hosting a fireside chat on "Future of Talent: Accelerating HK's Tech Talent Transformation", led by Ms. Karuna Tsang (LPCUWC '06), Director of Program and Head of Special Projects at Generation Hong Kong, a McKinsey-founded non-profit with expertise in developing and implementing targeted training and professional support for different sectors to tackle their pain points.

Joining her will be Mr. Eric Moy, CEO of KBQuest, a global digital transformation consulting firm with more than 1,300 professionals in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Shanghai. Outside of work, Eric is a radio host of a Commercial Radio Hong Kong technology program.

Also joining the panel is Mr. Ivan Wong, Industry Lead (Education) of Microsoft Hong Kong, who manages the company’s relationship with education providers across higher education and K12. Ivan is also a host of the podcast "Career Saucing" and recently published a book sharing his insights into future of work.

The trio will discuss about this topic from 6pm - 6:45pm, followed by an open Q&A session till 7pm. Attendees are welcomed to grab drinks from ION (cafe & bar next door) and mingle at our site until 8pm.
